AIA, ASID, IIDA Agree to Move Forward

Representatives from The American Institute of Architects (AIA), American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), and International Interior Design Association (IIDA) announced on July 11 their agreement to collaborate immediately in six key areas.

The agreement was the result of a two-day conference June 28 and 29 in Holland, Mich., hosted by Herman Miller, Inc. In addition, Steelcase, Inc., Wilsonart International, Armstrong World Industries, Lightolier, and Milliken & Company sponsored the conference facilitation.

In examining opportunities for joint programs, the 16 architects and interior designers representing the three groups identified six areas in which potential benefits exist:
• Professional education
• Knowledge development and dissemination
• Public awareness
• Government affairs
• Joint benefits
• Building industry.

Each organization has agreed to analyze current resources and initiatives that could be shared or enhanced in these six areas to benefit all three organizations. Collaborative opportunities should be undertaken very soon, the joint statement announced. It avoided altogether the still-sensitive issue of licensing of interior designers.

ASID represents the interests of more than 30,500 members, including 20,000 interior design professionals, as well as students and industry and retail partners.
IIDA is a professional networking and educational association of more than 10,000 members in 8 specialty forums and more than 30 chapters around the world.
