CALL FOR GRASSROOTS PRESENTATIONS
2010 Grassroots Annual Leadership and Legislative Conference
February 3-6, 2010, Grand Hyatt Hotel, Washington, DC
AIA Grassroots, the annual leadership and legislative conference of the American Institute of Architects, will be held Wednesday, February 3, through Saturday, February 6, 2010, at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Washington, D.C. The conference will bring together leaders throughout the AIA community including component presidents, presidents-elect, and executives; the national board of directors; knowledge community leaders; emerging professionals; and leaders of other special member groups for four days of in-depth training in specific areas of advocacy and leadership skills development and enhancement, component, knowledge communities, and special member sharing of programs and activities, and networking.
Workshops on leadership and best practices sessions are a central part of the conference. Fridays presentations will focus on leadership skills; and Saturdays best practices sessions are intended to capture, organize, and share the collective experiences of AIA components and members for the benefit of all.
Submissions may range from new approaches to educating architecture students to raising public awareness of architecture through component newsletters and magazines. Other topics might include determining and implementing leadership roles and responsibilities; developing, monitoring and overseeing operational budgets and financial resources; mentoring strategies and techniques; increasing component membership; building an associates program; cultivating strategic alliances; coordinating a legislative day or other events for an Architect Week; and more.

Requirements for Presenters and Proposals
Proposals are invited from all AIA members, components, and special member groups. Proposals must include all of the requested information, including the speaker biographies (one paragraph for each speaker); otherwise they will not be considered.
Every effort will be made to include representation of Institute leaders from knowledge communities and special member groups and small, midsize, medium, and large components, both staffed and all-volunteer. Speaker recommendations may be made to help accomplish this goal.
All presenters must submit one copy of Part I and Part II of the proposal submission form and include a short (one paragraph) biography of each presenter. (The number of presenters for each program proposal should not exceed three.) Incomplete entries and entries without biographies will not be considered.
Proposals must be received by the close of business on Friday, August 28, 2009. No exceptions will be made.
Continuing Education
Not all presentations are intended as continuing education, some are for information or as business operations of the AIA. In order for your course to qualify for AIA/CES continuing education credit specific items are necessary and have been requested in this document. These include a brief course outline with at least 4 learning objectives; the length of the presentation; your intent as to whether it is suppose to qualify for HSW or sustainable design; and your signature that you have read the Instructor quality Commitment Statement.
Selection Criteria
Selection criteria will include a well-defined program focus, speaker experience, practical application, timeliness of the topic, and component size and location. All workshops must allow time for questions and comments from the audience.
Length of Workshop
Workshops will not exceed one hour and thirty minutes. Depending on the workshop content, participants will earn LUs for the majority of the sessions.
Notification and Funding
All submitters will be contacted personally and will also receive an electronic announcement. Presenters will be selected from individuals who plan to attend Grassroots.
Deadlines
Proposals must be received by Friday, August 28, 2009.
Notifications of selections and non selections will be made between October 9-30, 2009.

Facilitators are responsible for:
- Contacting all of the panelists beforehand to discuss the topics that will be covered by each panelist.
- Coordinating the start and end time for each panelist.

- Submitting a detailed workshop outline to the AIA Component Relations team before Grassroots.
- Integrating a 20 to 30-minute Q&A period at the close of the presentation.
